The Everybody Loves Raymond Effect

Everybody Loves Raymond tv show photo

When I lived in Milwaukee, my roommates and I paid for Most Basic Cable (ten channels and reception) but ended up getting Basic Cable (lots of channels–forty? eighty? lots!).  The man who installed it had been transferred from Texas, and was distracted by the chilly weather and the fact that so many Milwaukee homes have basements.

Anyway.  We were delighted with this fortuitous turn of events.  Katie and Kristin got to watch the Tour de France, and I got to watch West Wing reruns to my heart’s content (in fact, this was how I became hooked on The West Wing).  It was great!

Thanks to the wonders of, I believe, TBS, we also discovered a little show called Everybody Loves Raymond.  (You may have heard of it.)  Katie and I went around saying, “Have you seen Everybody Loves Raymond?  It’s hilarious!”  Since this was 2003, and ELR (pro tip: this may or may not be a way true fans refer to the show) had been on the air since 1996, most people had, in fact, seen the show.

Here are some other cultural phenomena that I discovered embarrassingly late.  If you haven’t yet partaken, consider giving them a try:

Mad Men: In fact, I did try watching this show when it first came on in 2007.  After a few episodes at my parents’ house, with my mom saying, “The Sixties were really like that ” and Don Draper being a big jerk, I gave up.  Thanks to Netflix Instant, I gave the show another go this fall and am now hooked.  Because, guess what?  Mad Men is a really well-written, well-acted show with amazing period costumes and sets.  The rumors, it turns out, were true.

Pandora: I had obviously heard of this internet radio thing, but until last week I had never tried it.  I don’t usually listen to music while I work, but I had a sudden need to listen to Dar Williams.  So, I went to Pandora and requested “Dar Williams” radio.  It’s like magic!  Not just Dar, but other artists Pandora thinks I might like.  And, how about that?  Pandora is mostly right!

Community: People were always saying to us, “You should watch Commuity!  You would like it.”  And just three years later, we did watch it, and we do like it. And, apparently, it is on the verge of cancellation.  There’s a lesson there somewhere.

Greek yogurt: All of a sudden, everybody was raving about this stuff.  (At least, everybody who is interested in yogurt was.)  I was skeptical, but then, I had a coupon.   The raves were right!  Our whole family loves this yogurt, plus it has “2x the protein of regular yogurt”.  Why eat “regular” when you can have “Greek”?

Blogging: I didn’t think this would be nearly as fun as it is.  Could the same really be true for Twitter, that other cultural phenomenon I’ve heard so much about?

How about you?  What is a TV show / book / food / activity you resisted trying but are glad you finally did?  Or, what is something you still resist trying?

There was a time, though, when you were not discovering cultural cornerstones, but were, in fact, in tune with them. Ally McBeal was the pinnacle of late 90’s culture and those who knew of its power watched proudly and faithfully.

    • We did indeed! That’s another one I’ve enjoyed revisiting via Netflix Instant, although it’s not nearly as good as it was in the Third Burton lounge, lo these many years ago . . .

      • And I’m diggin’ Twin Peaks. A show I
was not old enough to appriciate when
It was on. Also, for a person who refuses
to arrange their life around a TV shedule,
Netflix is a godsend. (Note, I love it when
ray’s mother reaches through the slot
        and grabs his hair.)

I’m finally watching The Wire; up to the last season, and am sad already about it having been over for years.
Also, I was way late to the Parks and Rec game, another Netflix streaming option. I highly recommend large doses of it when home sick as laughter really is the best medicine.

    • We watched Parks and Rec from the beginning (Amy Poehler!) and love it. The Wire is definitely one we have been meaning to watch for . . . my goodness, for years. Time flies when you’re not spending it all watching televsion!

Oh, I forgot, we are also just now watching Battlestar Galactica (the reboot) and should get the last disc of season 4.5 today. I’ve heard the movie/finale was very controversial. I can’t wait til we watch that so I can read blog/reviews from years ago!

  3. We resisted The Office and now it is a favorite, despite Michael Scott leaving. We are stubborn supporters 🙂 Great post!

    • Thanks for stopping! Actually, I resisted The Office for a long time, too, mostly because I hated the original British series. Now I am a big fan, and am impressed that the show is funny without Michael!

      Like

      • Why did you hate the British series? Ricky Gervais is very ‘out there’ I’ll give you that but he has that something that seems to transcend the UK/US humour gap. I was not too impressed with the US version (having seen the original) but I didn’t actually hate it. Do you think maybe it’s a cultural thing?

        Like

      • Well, maybe “hate” is a strong word. I just found it depressing–the atmosphere in the office felt so dark. I do love Ricky Gervais–I liked him a lot on The Office and on Extras, which was a slightly more optimistic show. I like other British comedy, but I do think there are cultural differences (I mean, of course there are). But I am also someone who was very stressed out by Three’s Company as a child. I was too sensitive for those wacky misunderstandings . . .

  4. Oh, too many things to list. We live out in a village in the middle of nowhere, so most things come late and we don’t run a TV so anything I see is on play again on the internet or bought as a DVD. I minded this at first but it’s become a way of life. It only becomes dicey if you’re visiting the big city and you’ve no idea what some food is or what the heck someone is talking about. A totally other planet experience. 😉

    • We also live in a small town, and also just use the internet / DVDs as our media sources! But since I have hived in a few “big cities”, I can impress the confirmation kids with my cultural experiences. Example: “You’ve been to Jimmy John’s?” one girl asked with awe in her voice. Oh, yes. I am very urban that way.

      • Living in a city I do not even think of how someone who does not have access to “big city stuff” might feel. The world is so small now with acces to info so readily and quick.
I had never watched Seinfeld until the last two years of the show’s run. I love the re-runs. One of those shows you can always watch, you do not have to be in the mood or think! A great written post…blogging is TOTALLY rewarding, enjoyable and addicting! Congrats on FP, you have every right to be thrilled. I will be on cloud nine the day I get on the Freshly Pressed page. Gonna go read some of you other posts now. Enjoy the lime light!

My husband has an abiding love of strip malls that I did not understand until we visited one of the towns where he grew up–I could see how a strip mall would really liven things up. Now we enjoy online shopping (and trips to the Target twenty miles away).

And now that I’ve read this, I think it’s a sign. But I don’t believe in signs, so I’m perplexed…

If you haven’t tried a Nook or Kindle, please do. I resisted this trend, but given that I’m considering e-publishing a book (based on my blog), my boyfriend bought me a Kindle Fire last week.

I have resisted liking Justin Bieber. I have so far succeeded. 😀 (though never ask me if I have any of his ridiculous songs memorized. I may have to fib, and fibbing is not attractive.)

This is how it usually went in my house while growing up:
Let’s use the phenomenal science fiction show, “Fringe” as an example.

    *commercial for Fringe comes on*
Me: “Mum, that looks like a great show! We need to watch it!”
Mum: “We’ll give it a try.”
    Dad: “Looks stupid.”

    *first few episodes of Fringe*
    Mum: “It’s gonna bomb.”
    Me: “I think it’ll last.”
    Dad: “It’s stupid.”

*after a couple seasons, I pick the show back up and watch everything I missed*

Me: “If we had watched one more episode, we would’ve been hooked to Fringe.”
    Mum: “Is it good?”
Me: “It’s awesome, just like I thought it would be. Why don’t you listen to my awesomeness?”
    Dad: “It’s probably still stupid.”
Mum: “We’ll give it another shot.”

*a few months of mum and dad watching it*

    Mum: *is hooked to Fringe*
Dad: “Everybody shut up Fringe is on!”

Side note: My dad is NOT an unintelligent human being at all, but when he doesn’t have to explain himself, he yells out a couple of words and leaves it at that.

Another side note: I’m not kidding about the one episode thing. After I’d watched Fringe again, it was literally one episode after we’d dropped it that hooked all three of us. Has that ever happened to anyone else?

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

    • Ha! Now you have me singing, “Baby, baby, baby” under my breath. Thanks for that.

I love your “Fringe” story. I have seen an episode or two of that, mostly because I love Pacey (I mean, Joshua Jackson). I will have to put it on the list to try again, although the fact that we just went from two discs to one disc at a time does not bode well for a new, non-streaming show. We shall see!

  11. I generally try things when they’re recommended to me and so the opposite will happen. For example, everyone kept talking about how great Big Bang Theory was.

“You must watch Big Bang Theory,” they’d tell me, “it’s hilarious.”

So I thought to myself, why not? It can’t hurt to give it a shot. So I tried watching it and I just couldn’t get into it. In fact, I tried twice. Maybe there’s something wrong with me, but I just don’t find it as funny as everyone else.

Anyways, this had a point, but I got distracted telling my Big Bang Theory story.

I didn’t get hooked on Lost until the next to last season. As a result, I sat in my apartment and watched the first many seasons one episode after another until I was caught up over the course of a few weeks.

And it took me a while to get into the Pandora thing. But let me tell you, if you like Pandora you’ll love this new thing called Spotify. I downloaded it through Facebook and it’s like the Napster of the here, but the itunes of the there. All the music is free (from your computer) and it lets you listen to the entire songs, but if you want to take it with you (through a device) you can then buy the song(s). Don’t discover this one embarrassingly late either.

Since coming to college I began eating yogurt, never liking it for some reason, and now I’m completely hooked on it! Greek yogurt is so good, my favorite being the strawberry.
I finally broke down and read The Hunger Games since the movie is coming out and all of my friends have been talking about. I never like reading books just because they are popular; I am more of the classics fan, but I read the book in three days. Though it was good, and I am glad I am in on the conversations now, I dont feel like i should or have to read the next two, so reading it was a momentary weakness for me. Now on to Dracula…

  51. We must be simpatico! I had the same experience with Madmen! Yuck. And then, this year…Wow! I love it. My husband and I watched it like it was our addiction until we finished the seasons. I want more. And the same with Pandora. We also discovered MOG, which is like Pandora except that you can go back and listen again to a song you liked, pull up entire albums of artists you like and set how much of a single artist you want the station to play. More control over your listening to Pandora for a small monthly fee ($5 I think). We love Modern Family too. Have you seen that one?

    • I KNOW! I cannot wait for season five of Mad Men. My husband still doesn’t like it, so it was my own private addiction, two episodes at a time. But we both really like Modern Family! Thanks for stopping, Risa! Your blog is lovely.

Still don’t watch much TV, but Community is great from what I’ve seen of it. It was high time we had some pop culture show about community colleges too!

Oh, and queue up the UK original version of Skins on Netflix and be ready for when they have Misfits. Two British shows that are weird and very well written.

    • What, you’re not reading every one, Manda? I’m a little hurt.

That’s funny that you mentioned the tv show “Community” because when it first came out I wasn’t all that interested. I moved to a different residence about a year ago and started streaming shows online and happened to watch it on a slow night. It was really quite funny and so I started watching other episodes. I didn’t know that it was going to be canceled. Figures…

  58. With me, I fell in love with a little show called, “The New Adventures of Old Christine”. It’s now off the air. Every show I like seems to get cancelled but I didn’t discover this show until it was already gone. I’m not responsible for it’s demise but I feel guilty for not helping keep it on. Sorry Julia.

I always feel so late to the game when I discover something that everyone else seems to already know about! Crazy how shows I grew up with are now on re-runs and Nick-at-Night! I almost fell out of my Lazy Boy when I flipped through the channels and found Friends on Nick-at-Night! Although, come to think of it, anytime you watch a show on Nick it means you’re a late-show. I mean, I watched Mary Tyler Moore. Late.

We met Robert from ELR as you call it, back in the early 90’s. He had long hair then and really nasty jokes. Every year he performed at our Lupus Foundation Golf Tournament until they asked him to clean up his show or move on. He moved on and landed on ELR.

at the risk of being shunned, misunderstood or both – golf on TV. while i understand the general premise of how golf works, i don’t comprehend the apparent thrill of watching somebody in the cowardly act of whacking an innocent little white sphere which is only a fraction of their size, using a club (euphemism for a weapon) and shooting it far away, only to follow it over and over again. such a torment. it hardly seems civilized, and certainly not fun. and yet quite a number of people do this – and there are spectators, too. and you can watch this on live television. reality TV which boggles the mind.

but maybe i will one day be enlightened and ‘get it’. if so, i will be sure to blog about it 🙂
