28th Birthday Cake, lemon poppyseed bundt by Mike.
So said my mother when I told her that I was not going to interrupt Mike’s dissertation writing schedule just because my birthday happens to fall on my day off. (I might make him eat Chinese food and see Moneyball, because even if it’s not a national holiday, it is still his wife’s birthday, right?)
Last night I told Zoe that she should wish me a happy birthday when she woke up today, and she said, “It’s your birthday! It’s gonna be crazy!” Seriously. That is what my two-and-a-half year old said at supper last night, in between alternating bites of pork chop and strawberry yogurt (she has a very refined palate.)
So, if you define crazy as, “browsing around Main street in Litchfield, having coffee and a cookie at Cricket Meadow Tea, watching Parenthood during what you hope is a nice, long nap time, and possibly squeezing in a trip to the grocery store before dinner and a movie”, then yes: it’s gonna be crazy.
But mostly, it’s going to be a cozy day with my daughter and evening with my husband, with an abundance of baked goods and some presents. And I am going to love it.

As for presents: Mike offered his to me last night (obviously, I accepted) and I opened Mom and Dad’s as soon as I was dressed (right before breakfast). I also had one waiting for me at Cricket Meadow, which I got when Zoe and I went for our cookies. So, the tradition is more or less intact.

As far as I’m concerned your birthday pretty much should be a national holiday!! I’ll never forget last year when I told my friends I didn’t want to make a big deal of my birthday this year and they really, really listened. No gifts, no party and most of them went out of town with their boyfriends -leaving me at home single and alone!
Never again! From now on I’m going all bells and whistles every year until I don’t want people to know I’m getting older any more!

Actually, my birthday is a national holiday as it falls on January 1 however most people celebrate it the day before.

Still, even celebrating it a day earlier – everyone is still in full Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa. New Years mode. I do like the idea that eliserae mentioned – about having an intimate celebration with 5 closest friends in the middle of July, but what I have come to embrace is celebrating other people’s birthdays. I like throwing parties for my kids or going to a summertime cook out for my brother’s birthday. Living vicariously, it’s an option I have learned to embrace when it comes to my birthday

Your title really caught my eye, because my older son was almost born on Christmas (Dec. 29) and my younger son WAS born on the 4th of July – so his birthday really IS a national holiday! And he even gets fireworks every year!

The pitfalls of being a Holiday Baby – they go on forever.
I was born on January 1st and as my father reminded me every year – 2 hours and 10 minutes too late to be a tax deduction. Second in the State of Maine that year – and only Lord knows how far down the line I was nationally.
I’ve tried several spins on being a New Year’s Baby –
The – “Everyone in the entire world celebrates my birthday” spin
Trying to enjoy all of the extra good wishes partying strangers pass along to me when then find out –
and the “I will live a special birthday day” through my friends.
None of that has any consolation.
I want a day that is unique to me – that is all about me – just once.
I really would love a birthday that isn’t so close to another present exchanging day. Can I tell you how many birthday presents I receive on Christmas – just in case we don’t see you next week? Really? Can you just say something more hurtful?
If my birthday were – say – April 11th, for example, I am sure that is a famous day in history – somewhere, but you wouldn’t be tempted to save a Christmas present and call it a birthday gift. You would make the extra special effort to help me celebrate my unique day with me and not have it be a side note to grand celebration of ringing in the new year.
Yup, birthdays come in all shapes and sizes. Just us holiday babies – we just get ripped off.

Oh, Linda, I do understand, although you Christmas Eve babies have it worse than I do! For many years I insisted that my family wait to get the Christmas tree until after my birthday, and refused to accept birthday gifts wrapped in Christmas paper. Okay, I didn’t refuse them, but I complained about them. As an adult, I am much more relaxed about these things, although I had to laugh when my brother-in-law presented my birthday gift in inside out Christmas paper.

Love it!! Due to my job I have to work every holiday at least 10 hours or more, so I have declared my birthday my holiday. I ALWAYS take it off and just bum around the house as my present with a nice dinner and amazing dessert.

That’s a great present! I was pretty tempted to rearrange my work schedule so that I could send my daughter to day care that day and bum around by myself. In the end, my desire to hang out with her (and the fact that I really had too much non-toddler-friendly work to do that week) won out.

I’ll admit… sometimes I get carried away with my birthday. My mom was in labor for 3 days with me, so we sometimes joke around and celebrate the 2 days leading up to my birthday as well as the day itself. (Basically that was my parents flying to visit me while I was in college and we spent the weekend hanging out, or I’d fly home and we’d do dinner one night and the rest was just a regular trip home, but fell over those days.) However, even I draw the line at people who celebrate their birth month or have more than one event at which your presence is required. Hope your birthday was awesome, relaxing with your family sounds like just the ticket 🙂 And your daughter does, in fact, sound hilarious!

This past year, for our birthdays (mine and my husbands), we’ve gone out for breakfast since we are up early with our now 18 month old. It was a great experience both times and our daughter loved it! (And Happy Birthday to you).

No it’s not a national holiday – but my wife sure acts like my children’s birthdays are pretty darn close to it. I don’t know if it’s because they fall on days of school, or because their getting older and their not babies and she is trying to squeeze more in [ maybe make up for bad times ] but it can get ridiculous when here comes grandpa and wants to help her make it an even bigger event.

My family has some….rather strange traditions for birthdays and other holidays. For instance, the traditional spanking for how old you are. We also have my father’s friend dress up as a clown and walk around in a public spot holding your hand.

My birthday is tomorrow (Christmas Eve). I’ve never had a birthday party or anything like that. One year, my aunt was coming up to celebrate my birthday, and my mom informed me that she’d be gone by the time I got home from work. I said, can’t she come later or something so I can see her? I have 4+ siblings and when any of us had a birthday, Mama would give us all the option to stay home from school. It was a holiday. Sometimes my dad would take the day off. Imagine my bewilderment when I had to choose between working on my birthday and being short on my check. Of course, as an adult, I’ve had an employee ask for the day off for his birthday. I Laughed. Out. Loud.

Lovely post! Regardless of how old I am, my birthday is a prime excuse for unleashing my inner-child. I ALWAYS have ‘Colin the Caterpillar’ cake from Marks & Spencer. Without a doubt. If my mum forgets her daughter’s strict birthday routines (it has been 20+ years now…) there will be suitably child-like tantrums. And nobody can eat the white chocolate face. Birthday girl’s privileges!

The only baked good I like on my b’day is pineapple-filled yellow cream cake. Growing up allergic to nuts (including chocolate most of the time) it became the safe choice for my parents, and I love it! My b’day also falls on Dr. Martin Luther King Day pretty often (or at least that weekend) so it is an “event” even if most people I know miss it. Kudos on getting Pressed like the smell of freshly baked adult brownies! ;- j

Great post. Glad I found it today of freshly pressed. It got me to thinking about the fact I was a preemie born a month early. I always wished it had been one month and 6 hours early. I would still be in my teens and would have had a choice between a Feb 28 or a Mar 1 celebration, or maybe cake on both days!! 🙂

I usually hang out with friends the weekend prior and spend the day with my kids and a couple of friends. This year was semi-milestoney (35), I accomplished a LOT of goals this year, and it actually fell on Thanksgiving. The stars had aligned to do it up with a great house party. It was awesome…but I couldn’t imagine doing that every year.
Your daughter’s reaction is hilarious though. Glad you enjoyed your “crazy” tea and cookies.

almost everyone in my office takes the day off on their birthday or another day off if their birthday falls on a weekend. I guess they think their birthday SHOULD be a holiday!

Honestly, I admire you. I haven’t have birthday cake for several years since I was probably 10 or even younger. At present, I am still working for my career alone and cannot see my future. I hope someday I would have my own happy family.

some years my birthday falls on the holiday known as the Queen’s Birthday in Australia – not the Queen’s real birthday, but the day on which it is celebrated with a public holiday. The Queen’s Birthdaypublic holiday is the only reason I can think of for Australia not becoming a republic. It’s rather nice having a public holiday for you birthday!

My dad always bought me a cake at the bakery close to his work, chocolate with white icing. So it must be for every birthday from now on, and I must keep the left overs in the refrigerator because everyone knows chocolate cake tastes wonderful straight from the refrigerator.

That’s a great idea! Although I would never, ever want to try either of those things. Maybe I could try a new kind of food instead . . . Something that doesn’t involve throwing myself off a bridge or out of a plane.

It so is a national holiday. For you and 600 people.
I just dress up and carry myself proudly. And I mean dress up. Sometimes that means looking extra nice and sometimes it means wearing my cookie monster dress. It’s my birthday so its just up to me to make it special, even if the world doesn’t comply.

Thanks – I do try and make is special, but I think this more or less falls under the category of you always the opposite of what you have. I mean a girl with curly hair always wants straight – skinny girls who just can’t seem to put on weight want to be a little bit more like me – look at a piece of birthday cake and gain 5 pounds. I always wanted to be the kid who had their birthday – like in the middle of April –
I guess someone had to be born on New Years – so I might as well just embrace it, huh?

I just think December birthdays kind of have some negative side effects. I mean, they’re still awesome because hello it’s your birthday…but there’s so many other things! And it messes up your age. I was born at the beginning of the month. Since Hanukkah goes by a Lunar calendar, my birthday is sometimes in the middle of Hanukkah. So this year, I just had a birthday party for me and closest 5 friends in the middle of July. One birthday party for all of us. It worked out nicely. 🙂

Ah, bless you for understanding this concept! As a teacher, I run in to many parents who think that birthdays ARE national holidays; I even included the topic in a recent post of mine (http://littlehouseinthemountains.com/2012/02/20/10-things-your…could-tell-you/). It’s refreshing to see that someone can enjoy their birthday and feel special without it having to be a huge production.
